KoboToolbox awarded the 2024 Pizzigati Prize for Software in the Public Interest

We are proud to share that KoboToolbox has been selected as the 2024 recipient of the prestigious Pizzigati Prize for Software in the Public Interest. This esteemed award celebrates software developers who create open source tools that have measurable benefit for nonprofit organizations and the communities they serve. At KoboToolbox, our team is dedicated to delivering accessible, innovative, and high quality data technology to support the important work of nonprofit organizations worldwide. We are honored to receive this recognition of our commitment to community engagement, equitable access, and data-driven global impact.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to our community feedback contributors—the Caribbean Development Bank, Outreach International, Human Resource and Rural Economic Development Organization, and the National Cooperative Business Association CLUSA International—whose support played a crucial role in our achievement of this recognition. We would also like to thank the NTEN team and the selection committee for all the work they do to support nonprofit technology and for recognizing KoboToolbox with this award.

Most of all, we’d like to thank our incredible global user community. We are honored to support your crucial work in the communities you serve. As a nonprofit, our mission is to make quality data accessible to everyone and to support social impact initiatives to create data-driven change. Funding from the Pizzigati Prize will contribute directly to developing priority features based on community feedback as well as improving the accessibility of our platform. Together, we can continue to expand the impact of open source data technology and help to advance sustainable locally-led development efforts in communities around the world.

Thousands of nonprofits operating in the most challenging settings rely on KoboToolbox everyday. In 2023 alone, our users collected over 230 million survey submissions with their projects, and the KoboToolbox community continues to grow, with more users and organizations across the globe choosing our platform for their data collection.

From our earliest iterations in the work of our co-founders, Phuong Pham and Patrick Vinck, to the newest innovations created by our dedicated global team of developers, researchers, and data specialists, KoboToolbox has been designed for data collection practitioners, by data collection practitioners. Our goal is to provide innovative and reliable tools that respond to the needs of organizations working in the field. We strive to ensure that nonprofit organizations worldwide have access to the tools they need to produce high quality data so they can make an even greater impact where it matters most.

NTEN, the organization behind the Pizzigati Prize, shares our dedication to leveraging the use of technology in the nonprofit sector to achieve positive social change. Through initiatives like the annual Nonprofit Technology Conference (NTC), where the Pizzigati Prize winner is announced, NTEN fosters connections and advances the use of technology across the sector. With their focus on equitable access, NTEN also offers capacity strengthening and community building opportunities to support the nonprofit community worldwide.

Established in memory of Antonio “Tony” Pizzigati, an early advocate of open source computing, the Pizzigati Prize celebrates the contributions of open source developers who are making a meaningful impact for nonprofits and social change movements. Each year, the Pizzigati Prize recognizes individuals who embody this spirit of innovation and commitment to public service through software development and the use of technology for the betterment of society. Our team is deeply honored to have been selected from among the applicants to receive an award that so closely aligns with our mission.
